My Top 17 Films of 2012

My Yearly Top Films List is a tad different — it includes films from any year that I just happened to catch for the first time during 2012.  Here was my list from 2011.

I’ve been so busy this year that I didn’t get to see nearly as many as I’d wished (see the very bottom of this blog for the complete list of films I watched in 2012).

So here we go...

17. Les Miserables (2012) – made the list for Hathaway’s performance of “I DREAMED A DREAM” alone. The rest of the film and performances are very uneven, but there’s no denying the scope of the film and talent involved. - See more at: http://grking.com/2013/01/01/my-top-17-films-of-2012/?preview=true&preview_id=13916&preview_nonce=c611840fe3#sthash.YsylZcS6.dpuf

17.  Les Miserables (2012) – made the list for Hathaway’s performance of “I DREAMED A DREAM” alone. The rest of the film and performances are very uneven, but there’s no denying the scope of the film and talent involved.

16. Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel (2011) – love seeing the passion and drive behind one of the hardest working filmmakers in show business. The man is a true inspiration.

15. Tuesday, After Christmas (2010) – a raw, genuine portrait. Nothing fancy but yet so compelling

14. Moneyball (2011) – I love baseball and grew up in the Bay Area so it already had a few pluses going for it. This film makes the science behind the game entertaining. The understated and gentle performance by Brad Pitt is his best in years.

13. Happy Happy (2010) – dark, bleak and yet funny as hell.  Rarely done well when mixed together but this one gets it right.

12. The Zen of Bennet (2012) – seeing Tony Bennett’s philosophy on life, music and art is such a breath of fresh air in our cynical society.  He’s a true professional and gentleman from a bygone era and it’s so wonderful getting an insight into his private life as he records his latest album.   This clip below shows Tony recording with Amy Winehouse (her last time in the studio before she passed away).  Watch him get her through the session with his talent, charm and patience.

11. Killer Joe (2011) – Friedkin nails it in this twisted examination of a family gone wrong. Stellar performances all around. I’d love to work with Juno Temple.

10. Playtime (1967) – saw this in 70mm. It was a visual treat and fascinating to be sucked in to Tati’s world.

9.  Magic Mike (2012) – smart and low key. I always admire Soderbergh being able to take on a subject from a different perspective.

8. Django Unchained (2012) – Tarantino Western. Some parts better than others but overall always love seeing someone with a true vision.

7. The Skin I Live In (2011) – Almodovar’s perverted world on overdrive. Shocking and yet a very tender tale. Something only he could balance.

6.  Argo (2012) – a nice taut thriller. Some masterful direction.

5.  Silver Linings Playbook (2012) – a definite crowd-pleaser. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did.

4.  Being Elmo (2011) – very touching and personal story of triumph and passion.

3.  Warrior (2011) – powerhouse performances and such compelling screen presence by Hardy. This one took my breath away as I didn’t think I would enjoy another “fight” film.

2. Margaret (2011) – unpredictable in the best way possible. Anna Paquin is a firecracker in this. Some very unconventional storytelling makes this film a true standout.

1. The Grey (2011) – There’s a profound, powerhouse of a scene that happens during Act One that as soon as I experienced it, I realized this film has a lot more than the advertising led me to believe.  The themes of survival, life and death explored in the movie takes it to another level of self-reflection as you watch.  A stellar performance by Liam Neeson leads an amazing ensemble of actors .  This compelling film took me by surprise and didn’t let go until the last frame — which I feel is such an appropriate ending.
